TIME TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL to decorate...
Which should you hire . . . an interior designer or interior decorator . . . What's the difference, anyway? Should they be certified or licensed?
Both tend to overlap in scope of work & talent. Interior decorators decorate the restricted space available, sometimes losing the practical side to style. Interior designers have the expertise to make a new, more useable, space to decorate or style.
Being licensed has more to do with owning a business. Some professions need a business licence & some don't so check with your local jurisdiction. To become certified, (according to the Council for Interior Design Qualification), it depends on your local jurisdiction, in which professionals need certification to be considered a decorator or designer.
Why certification? Certification is for professionals that want to demonstrate they have proven expert standards & skills within the industry. Certification requires paying to test out of an industry standard & field work to gain experience.
Most experts agree that interior designers have some type of formal education in space planning, color theory, government codes for safety & health, etc. All of the interior design certifications require formal design education & work experience. Since interior decorators are decorating within a specific space, they tend to be self taught & have a great eye for design. Decorators do have a certification process similar to interior designers. So like professional organizers, they all have to have many paid projects before they can test out to become certified! In other words, if you have a less complicated project, then hiring a non-certified professional is great. They also tend to cost less, saving you money for great designs.
